Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gary Spolansky, Founder of The Power is You, located in Westbury, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Shamanic/Empathic Healer and Reiki Master in practice for 30 years. I work with people from all walks of life who are looking to release the doubts, fears, and experiences that keep them from accepting themselves for who they are. Whether the issue holding an individual back is from a recent experience or from long ago, my approach to healing is very effective. In fact, they will often see real movement forward with just one session.

Tell us about yourself

I began my career in the corporate world and actually worked there for over 20 years, but I reached the point where I needed to make a change for my own personal and spiritual growth, so I learned Reiki and became a Reiki Master. As I was learning Reiki, I was introduced to a talented healer who taught me how to access my Shamanic abilities. I quickly found that when I combined Shamanic/Empathic Healing with Reiki, I could help people heal far faster than with Reiki alone. My goal with this healing method is to help empower those who come to me to be all they can be. It's amazing how quickly an individual can grow if they are open and willing to let go of the past. This is what has kept me motivated and focused all this time.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been two-fold. Building my practice from the ground up has been quite gratifying. But equally gratifying is knowing I am making a difference in the lives of those who seek my help. It's quite humbling, and I sometimes wonder how do I do it? Of course, I know how, but there are times when I just marvel at how it manifests.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing I had to go through in building my practice was the many difficult years I endured while barely making a living. There were times when I said, "That's it, I'm done! I need to get a real job". But each time I said that, something happened to get me back on the path, and I'm so very grateful Spirit wouldn't let me give up.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make a plan. Know what you want to achieve and create a plan that helps you get there.
  2. Be realistic. You may be one of the lucky ones who take off right away, but the majority, in my experience, will need to take time to create their vision.
  3. If you feel this is your path and what you are here to do, then don't let others dissuade you- Believe in Yourself!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I have two offices where I see people in person, one in Westbury, NY, and the other in Port Washington, NY. Of course, I recognize that not everyone can come in person due to distance, scheduling, etc., so I also offer sessions by phone, Zoom, or similar.
