Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kate Holden, Owner of The Pourium, located in Winnipeg, MB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

A retail wine store with giftware, accessories, gift baskets, subscriptions, and tasting experiences. Our customers are anyone 18 plus with a thirst and passion for wine and beyond. We transform the beverage shopping experience by providing a fun, approachable, and inviting atmosphere with an abundance of product knowledge so our customers feel more confident and empowered in their product selections. Customers who also look beyond the label and want to spread happiness and create memorable moments over the perfect pour.

Tell us about yourself

I am a portfolio entrepreneur taking an abundance mindset to one level extra. A divergent thinker who colors outside the lines and never leads to the predictable. (I mean, that is my brand statement) I am unapologetically excessive, which is appropriate given my #onelevelextra hashtag. I had a passion for wine with equal passion and aptitude for learning, growing, and building things. Motivation for me is to constantly #dobetter than I did yesterday, be better in everything I do, and leave things better than I found them. Finding value in helping people transform into their best selves by making informed choices.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Scaling and growing the business to the store you see today while developing a team culture and an elevated shopping experience.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The highs and lows of being a portfolio entrepreneur. When things are good, they are fabulous; when you hit the dips (no matter what they are), knowing to be intentional and learn how you come out of it and with who. The climb out and what happens next are what matters.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

They might seem simple but:

  1. Be intentional.
  2. Set goals.
  3. Dream big.
  4. Make it happen.
