Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Whipkey, Founder of The Plant Potential, located in Houston, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a registered dietitian with a virtual private practice. I specialize in plant-based nutrition but work with anyone who eats anything. If you want to create a better relationship with food, prevent or help treat chronic disease with lifestyle changes, are plant-curious, and want to learn how to incorporate more whole, unprocessed plant foods into your diet, etc.- I'm your gal!

Tell us about yourself

I have been plant-based for close to 15 years now. I was able to witness firsthand how a plant-based diet can significantly change someone's quality of life for the better. This person lost over 50 lbs, lowered their cholesterol and decreased their medications- all by eliminating animal products and increasing physical activity. I absolutely love the science behind plant-based diets, as well as the positive impacts on animals and the environment. Working with clients and improving their mindsets and relationships with food is also incredibly rewarding. I practice intuitive eating and love it when clients are able to relearn their hunger and satiety cues and let go of harmful beliefs and practices regarding their nourishment.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Getting my first positive testimonials had a great impact on me. When your business involves providing a service, you always want to believe that people will not only like you but feel you have genuinely helped them in some capacity. To have clients take time out of their day to share their positive experiences with me felt like a huge accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Learning to focus, set boundaries, and feel like there is actually enough time in the day to get everything you want done- done!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Minimal viable product! Your goal should not be perfection. If your product/service/offering is at about 80% of what you want it to be-, stop and go live with it! It is entirely too easy to keep yourself from growing by not putting yourself out there because everything isn't perfect.
  2. Be true to your values. Make sure you believe in what you are offering. It may, at times, be tempting to compromise to make a quick buck, but that will likely catch up to you.
  3. Allow for vulnerability. Getting out of your comfort zone is scary, but the opportunities it allows are endless.
