Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in life coaching but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kathryn Burmeister, founder at Burmeister Law, a lawyer who is also coaching people to lead a happier life.

What's your business and who are your customers?

I have a personal injury law firm I strive to protect those that have been unlawfully injured by others. I also am author, speaker and coach. Through my book Overcoming Addiction to the Status Quo speaking, and coaching I try to help see why they need a healthier work life balance and how to achieve it. So, that they can ultimately build a life that makes them happy.

Tell us about yourself

I am motivated to help people through both my businesses. I want to help people live happier lives.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Every case that I win where my client is compensated for their injuries I see as a huge accomplishment. Every person who reads my book and decides to make a change to improve their life. Every time I speak and someone is inspired. These are all big accomplishments because I was able to help someone.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I think there are different things that are challenges at different stages of owning a business. At the beginning it is having the courage to take the leap and establishing everything. Later it's finding the right people to hire that you can work with and trust.

Later it's figuring out how to expand and what to focus on. Maintaining a healthy work life balance is a challenge throughout, allowing yourself to take a break and even a vacation when you need it.

What are the top 3 tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Trust yourself -  you can do it!
  2. Find a mentor or friend - someone who has started a business to give you advice and encouragement along the way.
  3. Embrace setbacks -  every business has them but they are not final. Learn from them and move on.

If there was one thing you could do repeatedly to help grow your business, what would it be?

Get my clients to write more reviews. I think referrals are one of the best ways to grow your business.

What are some of the things you put in place to maintain a healthy work/life balance?

I schedule out my time and I schedule time for myself in my calendar. If you don't schedule it, I find that it is unlikely to happen. I don't try to take on more than I can handle and make my work-life balance a priority.

Who are some of your favorite entrepreneurs and why?

Mel Robbins and Bene Brown.

I had the opportunity to hear Mel Robbins speak and find her very inspiring. I also listen to the Bene Brown podcast. Not only is her story inspiring but so many of her guests are too!

Bene Brown's book Dare To Lead is a great book too.
