Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Guy Escolme, Co-Founder of The Pathfinder Spirit, located in Seattle, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Pathfinder is a fermented and distilled hemp-based liquid with intense flavor and aromatic characteristics of a spirit, with none of the alcohol. In drinks, The Pathfinder behaves like a spirit and can be taken as a shot, sipped neat, served on the rocks, or used as the base of a cocktail.

Our consumers enjoy a good cocktail but don't necessarily want the alcohol. They are trailblazers who refuse to succumb to the same old routines. They like to strike their own path and try something new.

Tell us about yourself

I spent the majority of my career in the drinks industry, and The Pathfinder was born out of a simple question: what will the back bar of the future look like? We believe the era of alcohol at the center of all socialization is fading, and people are thirsty to carry on the rituals they love but not always with booze at the heart of it all. So we set out to create a beverage of unparalleled complexity and taste. No compromises; the Pathfinder is not about what's been taken out, and we're all about what has been put in.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Hand-picking the team that I wanted to partner with and work with. The team is everything.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Business ownership brings with it a whole new level of responsibility and risk - not to mention the need to roll up your sleeves and be ready to get stuck into all aspects of the business, from strategy to execution. When things get tough, I always remind myself that it's those who find joy in the journey who progress the furthest.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Be grateful for the past, be engaged in the present, and have a vision for the future.
