Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Martin MacArthur, CEO of The Outbound Sales Guy, located in Ottawa, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are an outbound sales development agency helping early-stage founders and B2B businesses build and execute predictable, repeatable, scaleable outbound sales engines to book qualified sales meetings.

Tell us about yourself

I started working with my parents in their grocery store, where I worked alongside my father and experienced how he treated each customer and employee, providing exceptional service and fostering trust and respect within the workplace.

As someone who is completely blind, I have a unique ability to inspire and impact those I come in contact with, and this has led to my why over time to positively impact and inspire every single individual I interact with.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

So far, I would say the biggest accomplishment is acquiring my first few clients. As any business owner will tell you, client acquisition is one of the hardest areas to master. It'd feel like you haven't proven your proof of concept or that you're actually a business until you attain that first client and then the next client, and so on.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Personally, I would have to say managing the highs and lows that you will experience day-to-day as a business owner. When you are an employee of a company, you have processes, technology tools, procedures, and team members you can fall back on, but when you are on your own, all of that relies on you to figure out.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just get started, and don't worry about any of the agonizing details.
  2. Once you have a product/service in place and know what you plan to offer the market, start working on a solid foundation that you can fall back on in regards to processes, tools you will use, etc.
  3. Dedicate time each day to prospecting for new business, even if it is only for 30 or 60 minutes a day, because, without a full pipeline, you will continue to struggle to grow the business.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Don't be afraid to reach out to your community if you are having difficulties with figuring something out within your business because you will be forced to learn how to become a revenue operations person, a marketing operations person, a sales operations person, finance and human resources, and it can all be overwhelming so lean on colleagues and friends if you require support or guidence.
