Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Nikki Cohen, Owner of The Organic PT, located in San Diego, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the owner of The Organic PT, a business that provides Women's Health Physical Therapy with a holistic approach using a proprietary blend of traditional physical therapy techniques combined with Craniosacral Therapy and Visceral Manipulation. This blend of therapies with longer treatment times allows a person to get to the source of what's causing the ongoing pain or dysfunction and is very effective.

I also offer online programs that empower women in their healthcare. The first program is Bladder Essentials, perfect for women who struggle with bladder control issues. Bladder Essentials provides all the basic, essential information to help resolve bladder problems from the comfort of your home. The second online program, Postpartum Essentials, educates pregnant women on how to heal optimally after the miracle of giving birth. The Organic PT serves women looking for true healing rather than merely treating symptoms.

Tell us about yourself

I'm passionate about providing a safe, sacred space for women to be heard and acknowledged, in addition to providing care that gets to the source of physical ailments and dysfunctions. I left corporate healthcare to have the freedom to do things "my way," which includes longer treatment times and more time to connect and empower women in their life while also alleviating their pain. It's truly beautiful when clients cannot only do what they want to do again but are also left with a sense of freedom and peace.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I set out to provide a healing space using a holistic approach that works when other modalities haven't worked. My biggest accomplishment is the gratitude I receive from my clients when they can do what they haven't been able to do for months, sometimes years, as well as leaving each person with an experience of validation, being heard and seen, which is unfortunately rare these days.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, the hardest thing that came with being a business owner was embracing the digital age. Creating a website and keeping up with social media has been a challenge. Much of my business is word-of-mouth and referral based, which is great for locals! And, as I expand to reach more people, I've partnered with other incredible women to support the tech side of being a modern-day business owner. (Phew! Because this is not my forte!)

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Nothing replaces good old-fashioned referrals. When people are happy with your service, they will tell people and refer them, regardless of what you offer.
  2. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Outsource what you're not good at or don't want to do.
  3. Stay true to your intuition and reason for creating your business. It's easy to get distracted, and your true north will always come from within you.
