Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Annie Tsang, founder, and owner of The Nutrition Well, located in Burnaby, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I founded my nutrition consulting business, The Nutrition Well, in 2012. As a registered dietitian for over a decade, my dream has always been to own private practice and build a team of dietitians under The Nutrition Well umbrella!

Clients who come to me are those who want to make a change in their lifestyle or eating habit in order to reach their individual nutritional goals. These goals can vary from wanting to build a healthy relationship with food, preventing a chronic health disease, managing gut issues, improving energy, and trying to prepare for a healthy pregnancy, to name a few. My mission is to help my clients discover how to eat with awareness, manage cravings, love their bodies, and build a peaceful relationship with food.

My vision is to ensure every client accomplishes personalized nutritional goals that are adaptable to their lifestyle and realistic to achieve!

Tell us about yourself

I am a mother of two. Before kids, I had the idea that owning a business would give me the time to take care of my kids and have a career that I am passionate about. Well, I am glad I have started my business from the get-go because I have definitely spent more than full-time hours before kids to build my business since the beginning. All those efforts and energy really helped shape my business today and what I plan to build in the coming future!

Now that I have a team of 4 dietitian associates working with me, I can see myself being able to continue my passion of being a dietitian and spending time raising my kids. I am motivated to do what I do with The Nutrition Well because this is what I love. I love the various roles I can play as a dietitian, from consulting clients and facilitating lunch and learn presentations to planning nutrition courses or educating students and kids about nutrition at an early age.

I love when my clients feel accomplished and have reached their goals with my support and guidance. I love the differences that I can make in my clients' lives, whether that be a client who is able to conceive after years of trying or one who is able to really enjoy eating again and focus their minds on other important things in their lives!

I just love what I do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being to be one step closer to my dream - maintaining a thriving business and having my own team!

I am also very excited to be able to focus on my niche (thanks to my team) - women's health - fertility, prenatal, and perinatal! There are so many evidences behind fertility and pregnancy nutrition. I really want to support my clients by giving them the best chances for fertility and pregnancies!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I really have to say time and commitment. As much as I want to say my end goal is to be able to spend time raising my kids, being a business owner takes a lot of my time. You have to put the effort in - being up to date with evidence-based information, taking courses, keeping up with public relations, and just keeping the business alive.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Believe in yourself! If your dream is to own a business, do it, and don't give up!
  2. Albert Einstein said, "Failure is success in progress." 100%. Just remember that it is okay to fail. Without these experiences, we will not be able to achieve higher and farther.
  3. Be patient! Success will come if you have the intention and if you are committed.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

With my growing interest in women's health, I really look forward to helping more women to achieve their goals in improving their hormonal health, fertility, pre- or post-natal, maternity, and many more! I also look forward to providing more evidence-based information on my blog and recipe reviews in order to give and support those who would benefit from those extra tips and guidance.
