Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Megan Carter, Founder of The Nerdy Keeper, located in Peculiar, MO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a bookkeeper for women who own their own online, service-based business. They're ready to be the CEO of their business, not the accountant.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a CPA with over 11 years of experience in the corporate world. But I loved the entrepreneurial space, loved seeing how women could take their skills and turn them into a profitable business. I wanted to be a part of that. I started my business so I could support those women in growing their businesses. I also started my business so that I could be a stay-at-home mom someday while still supporting my family.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Reaching the point in my business where I could quit my full-time job was huge, and it lined up perfectly with actually becoming a mom. I'm able to stay home with my baby girl while still growing my business and supporting our family.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I struggle the most with putting myself out there. Showing up in new places to meet new people is hard since I'm such an introvert, but every time I do it, good things happen.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

I'm going to put my nerdy accounting spin on this question...

  1. Get a separate bank account and run everything for your business through it, even if you have to fund the bank account personally. It makes everything cleaner.
  2. Get bookkeeping software (Quickbooks online and Xero are great options) and keep track of your business from the start, even if you aren't making money yet. It's not very expensive, and it's so important!
  3. Don't be afraid to get help, whether it's with Social Media, a Virtual Assistant, or a bookkeeper. You don't have to do it all alone. You'll get farther if you focus on the things that are in your zone of genius.
