Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shameka Tillery, Founder of The Movement Group LLC, located in Cordova, TN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are in the business of setting people up for success in their careers! There are 3 primary services that people seek from TMG:

  1. Resume
  2. Interview Preparation
  3. Job Leads

Our target audience is the average working adult. Maybe you don't have formal education. Maybe you are having a hard time communicating your skills or don't know where to start. All you know is, you want to work and earn an income that allows you to live comfortably. This is the business we are in!

Tell us about yourself

Growing up in the city of Memphis, there was no shortage of poverty. I would find myself helping people with their resumes, providing career advice, and helping people apply for jobs. The Movement Group was founded in response to the realization that it is difficult to overcome poverty, earn a livable wage, and become self-sufficient without the proper tools and education.

The fact that people are still fighting to earn a livable wage is what motivates me. Our vision is a world where all people are economically stable no matter their marital status and family size.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The biggest accomplishment as a business owner is still being a business owner, lol. It's a big deal to be in operation and still get clients. I am so grateful for that.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is navigating all of the financial and state paperwork that has to be completed. Knowing what must be filed and even completing the paperwork correctly. When you start a new business, having a CPA or lawyer on stand-by is not always realistic, so you have to do everything you can to ensure you are doing everything properly and in order.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Count up the costs. Figure out how much time, money, and resources will be needed to launch and sustain the business.
  2. Set sales goals (weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annually). Having goals to work towards increasing business productivity.
  3. The team you choose to build with is CRITICAL. Be open and honest, empathetic, and willing to have hard conversations, and also your team's biggest cheerleader. Celebrate each milestone and learn from the disappointments...together.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

We shared our top 3 services; we also assist (we do it for you) with completing the job application, critique resumes, write cover letters, and provide pre-recorded webinars on relevant career topics.
