Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey by launching a health & wellness business but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bob McCauley, ND., founder of  The Watershed Wellness Center, based in Lansing, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Watershed Wellness Center is the largest importer of chlorella and spirulina in the US. We started in bottled water and have expanded into natural health over the last 28 years. The founder, Bob McCauley ND, has written several books on Natural Health, including one and how to give me the body of infectious diseases. His latest book, the killer in the mirror, nature's protocol for surviving cancer, tells us why we should choose character over the medical establishment when it comes to curing the body of any disease. The book is available both on Amazon and Audible.

Tell us about yourself

I started in the bottled water business and, over the years, discovered what proper health is. All disease comes from our diet and has nothing to do with our genes. I have always been health-minded, but I never understood good health until I moved to the raw food diet over 20 years ago. I have been a vegetarian for 40 years in a vegan for 20 years. I am a certified nutritional consultant, certified Master herbalist, and a naturopathic doctor. However, most of what I know about health I've learned through experience. I have been successful in business and could retire anytime. What motivates me is my desire to share what I have learned about proper health with the world, especially those who are not interested in following the ways of the medical establishment. Helping people become healthy and showing them how the body can cure any disease gives me great satisfaction.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I started my business in my basement in 1993. I opened Lansing, Michigan's first bottle water store in 1995, and I now own an 11,000 square foot facility. We are the largest importer of the two most potent Foods globally, spirulina and Chlorella. We are a registered FDA manufacturer and packager. I started my business with less than $5,000; our revenue this year will exceed $3,500,000. I have come from nothing and now am a significant player in the natural health arena. However, my biggest accomplishment is helping people get their health back, many of those who thought they would never be healthy again. The body is capable of healing itself of any disease. My message is one of self-empowerment and not of despair.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Finding good employees who are loyal to your company and keeping them with the company long term.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Know your product, and know your Market. Spend your money wisely and don't take unnecessary risks. These are the three things that put companies out of business more than anything else.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I knew almost nothing about how to run a business when I first started. I never hesitated to ask for advice from experienced business people. I am not the most brilliant business person nor the shrewdest. What has made me successful after 28 years in business is hard work, never turning my back on the company and expecting it to run itself, and refusing to give up.
