Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Elizabeth Bueti, Co-Founder of The Meek House Coffee + Tea, located in Redlands, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are in the business of coffee, serving it and roasting it, as well as tea and pastries! Our customers are people who enjoy sipping on a beverage and quality customer service.

Tell us about yourself

I am a creative at heart; it’s what I love to do. It’s what keeps me engaged. From brainstorming ideas to making it with my hands or with those around me is exciting! The vision of Meek started with the idea of creating a space where coffee drinkers from all backgrounds, regardless of coffee knowledge or preference, would be welcomed with kindness and served humbly by staff. We, my sister, and I were tired of feeling like we had to study menus and the culture of specialty coffee shops we had visited in the past, and we wanted to create something different. That want to be different trickled into our roasting side of the business and motivates us to continue to learn.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our ability to be flexible. Navigating through and surviving during the pandemic really honed in on the importance of being flexible and having grit in times of uncertainty.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The inability to see into the future. It seems like a ridiculous answer, but there is so much truth in that. Owning a business brings out your greatest fears and anxieties but also your greatest strengths and limitations as an individual. Sticking to your principles and the vision behind the business is crucial.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a vision and a mission statement that would stand the test of time outside your service or product. What do you want people to truly see and feel when they experience your vision?
  2. Make sure your personal priorities are set, and your boundaries are immovable. Your business will last as long as you will.
  3. Be willing to educate and shift and challenge your perspective each and every day! It will keep you focused and engaged.
