Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Suranee Waleszonia, Ph.D., Co-Founder and COO of The Master Mind Institute, located in Brea, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a clinical neuropsychologist, and I co-founded The Master Mind Institute with Ricardo Whyte, M.D., an addiction psychiatrist. The vision of The Master Mind Institute is to revolutionize how mental health is achieved in order to help people live happier, healthier, more purposeful lives!

Tell us about yourself

After working in healthcare for about 10 years, I wanted to be able to take my clinical experience and help people on a larger scale. I knew that there was a more approachable way to help people increase their resilience and decrease their level of burnout, so I left the clinical healthcare arena to be able to build a product that can immediately help people master resilience without having to wait months and months to get set up with a provider.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say my biggest accomplishment has been taking my years of clinical experience and transforming it out of the healthcare model into a product that a consumer can engage with easily! I love working with people, and owning my own business has allowed me to do this in a way that is not stipulated by medical insurance and hospital politics.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a clinical neuropsychologist, I spent 7 years in graduate education and another 2 years specializing in my field, and none of this time prepared me to know the logistics of running a business! The past year has been a steep learning curve of learning all things business related.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. As soon as you are financially able, start now!! The longer you wait, the longer you put off making your dreams a reality.
  2. Find a mentor. Having the right support has been instrumental in our business growth.
  3. Adopt the right mindset. Understand that you have to imagine your success in order to understand how to make it a reality.
