Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dwight Raymond Heck, owner, and director of Give A Heck, located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Dwight is also an award-winning author.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I do lifestyle and finance coaching that teach people how to live life on purpose and not by accident. To finally get off the hamster wheel of life and stop living in quiet desperation.

Tell us about yourself

I was 6 figure earner raising my kids and was always broke and living in quiet desperation. I was on the hamster wheel of life. Going to work, go home, get paid and repeat. In debt, no savings for emergencies or retirement, and not sure how to get ahead. So 19 years ago, I took charge of my life, learned the rules of the money game, and decided to ensure others knew the same. Every day I get up, and I am grateful for what I learned and what it has provided me, and it drives me to help others achieve the same.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Helping individuals, families, and businesses live life on purpose. I have many amazing stories of how my processes have changed people's lives.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Knowing that some will never follow what you help them with long-term and will climb back on the hamster wheel and once again stop living life on purpose.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your Why? Why do you want your own business, and do you know that many business owners just own a job.
  2. Have your concrete goals laid out along with timelines.
  3. Know your numbers exactly what it will take to pay your personal life bills, the exact amount to run the business. Ensure you have sensible financial resources to tap into during hard times.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

My book 'Give a Heck - How to Live Life on Purpose & Not By Accident' tells of my origin from childhood to where I am today. How getting into finance allowed me to raise my kids as a single Dad right up to writing my book and launching my own podcast called Give A Heck.
