Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Makesa Stovall, Owner of The Makhatter, located in Royse City, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a custom hat maker, and anyone looking for a unique, one-of-a-kind comes to me to work some magic.

Tell us about yourself

I've always been a self-starter in all of my endeavors. I taught myself how to paint years ago, and I was looking at these boring cowboy hats and thought there was a blank canvas for me. I started playing around with it, and I haven't stopped creating personalized hats for different individuals.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Personally, when I see the customer's faces and how excited they are about their very own custom hat, it makes me proud. I think that's so rad. I created that!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

This is my side huddle for now. That makes it difficult because there is so much I want to create, but I just don't have a lot of time to do it. Eventually, I'd love to have a hat store somewhere besides online and pop-up events. I love what I do, and I will keep grinding until I reach my dreams.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Believe in yourself because someone will always tell you you can't.
  2. Always keep going even when it's hard because there will be hard times.
  3. Don't doubt yourself! It's always worth working for yourself!
