What's your business, and who are your customers?
The Look By Joi specializes in all things eyebrows. We have a niche service and product line that goes hand and hand with each other. Our mission is not only to provide the services and products but to educate our clients and students with digital products and in-person training, to empower them with skills to achieve their goals, whether it be in their beauty routine or business life. The Look By Joi's products and services are for the everyday woman that wants to look good but doesn't have a lot of time to spend on their beauty routine. We educate our clients so they can get the look they want in the least amount of time. The Look By Joi's training and education empowers people who enjoy making people feel good and look beautiful with skills to add an extra six figures to their income.
Tell us about yourself
I was the first person in my family to start their own business. I didn't have a mentor or anyone who could help me along my journey. I hit a lot of bumps along the road and had to learn from trial and error. Once I realized the true success of my business, I realized I could be the mentor I never had when I started my business. Now I inspire people daily to not only look and feel beautiful but to believe in themselves and take action towards their business goals.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been being able to teach others the beauty and business skills to empower them to start their own businesses. In December of 2020, I wanted to create a way to inspire and empower people and help them build pandemic and recession-proof businesses. Seeing how many people lost jobs and closed their businesses, I knew I had to figure out a way to share what I knew about this billion-dollar beauty industry with others. I teamed up with Artistry Brows and The Perfect Brow Stencil to offer my Microblading to Microshading Tour classes for $1,000 off. I wanted to offer my classes at a price point anyone could afford to invest in. I have taught over 1,000 people how to make money doing brows and permanent makeup services, even in a pandemic. This was and still is a huge accomplishment for me as a business owner.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things about being a business owner is learning how to pivot. The beauty industry especially is always changing. Trends come and go, so being able to pivot with what you offer will help you to stay successful. We saw the world stop back in 2020 with the pandemic, so being able to pivot in business will help you withstand things like a pandemic, a recession, etc.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
For anyone looking to start, run and grow a business, there are three main things you need to figure out to set yourself up for success. Number 1 - choose a niche! Offer one core product or service and build out other products and services around that niche. Number 2 - position yourself as an expert. Based on your niche, focus your marketing efforts on showing potential clients and customers why you are the expert in the field. And lastly, number 3 - offer high ticket services or products. High ticket products and services will allow you to scale a bit faster because you are able to make more money per client or customer.
