What's your business, and who are your customers?
The Kassan Group is a law firm that offers legal counsel, coaching, and strategy support to mission-driven ventures and investors.
Tell us about yourself
When I first got out of law school, I worked at a nonprofit doing community economic development and supporting small businesses in a low-income community in Oakland, CA. I became passionate about helping the 99% of businesses that do not have access to supportive capital, so I went into private practice as a securities lawyer. I love to use my legal knowledge and experience as a small business owner, fundraiser, and investor to support diverse ventures all over the US.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is helping my clients raise hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars in patient, supportive investment capital.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The uncertainty and unpredictability - but that is also the part that makes it so engaging!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be realistic about what it will take to make your business successful - don't try to operate on a shoestring, not pay yourself a salary, etc.
- Raise supportive funding from investors to cover the costs of getting to profitability in a healthy, sustainable way.
- Know that fear is a natural part of running a business, but don't let it stop you!
