Growth for Good - The Jacobs Scheriff Group

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Adam Jacobs, Co-Founder of The Jacobs Scheriff Group, located in San Diego, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At the Jacobs Scheriff Group, we create value with companies and organizations whose product or service positively impacts society. We pride ourselves in guiding our clients through any stage of transformation in their business lifecycle. Our focus is on supporting impactful businesses that look to create opportunities for growth and wish to adapt to an ever-changing marketplace.

Tell us about yourself

Ein Scheriff and I have been working together for over 12 years. We successfully planned, designed, and operated a fitness and yoga studio called Fortis Fitness & YOGALUX for 10 years. During that time, we added to our knowledge base of business, and because of our diverse backgrounds in business, people were always drawn to us to ask for advice. We also are both passionate about helping the world be a better place for our children. We are both deeply involved in the non-profit world as well and know the vital role that they play in our society. But what if we could combine the two (for-profit and not-for-profit) and make an incredible impact. That is what we set out to do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When we founded our partnership almost a year ago, we had clients wanting to work with us before we even had our website, logos, branding, and other information set up. We were simultaneously working on our own business while working for clients. It was certainly a good problem to have, but it added an additional challenge nonetheless.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Prioritizing and time management are two of the hardest tasks being a business owner. You get pulled in so many different directions, and if you are not totally clear on what your priorities are, then you can get sucked into spending time, effort, energy, and resources on tasks that are less important. Then when you add on top of that your time outside of business, whether it be family, friends, other interests, or just giving yourself a break, it adds a whole other level of complexity.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Understand what your values and morals are. Your journey will test those, and you need to know where you are willing to compromise and where you will hold firm.
  2. Be flexible; you will be hard-pressed to find a business that is completely operating based upon its original business plan.
  3. Success doesn't happen overnight. You don't just open a business and all of a sudden, there is a line waiting for your product or service. You have to be willing to work for it and develop the relationships necessary for long-term success.
