Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewellery but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tina Ross, designer of The Goldsmiths, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a family-run business operating in Calgary for 53 years. Our priority is service and delivering high quality at fair prices. We specialize in re-creating old pieces to give them a new life, to better reflect your personality and lifestyle. We also focus on creating new pieces that are unique and built to last.

Tell us about yourself

Kirsten was drawn to the bench at the age of 17 and still works on pieces to this day. I have worked here for 26 years now, focused on designing and running the business. We are both motivated to keep this age-old practice alive, training the next generation in this art and making special pieces for each client.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment is how ingrained we have become in the families we serve. We are now assisting grandchildren in commemorating their milestones. We are so honored to be a part of special moments. Educating our clients on quality is a huge part of our success.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Staffing is one of the hardest aspects of any business. You must deal with different personalities, keep standards up and make sure everyone is happy. They are the face of your business when you aren't there, so they should feel pride in being a part of it too. Our staff is very long term and not easily replaced in their skill-sets.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Be passionate about what you are starting; it's infectious. Deliver on what you promise. Expect to put your all into running a successful business; discipline is paramount.
