Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skincare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Julie Riggins, Owner of The Goat Milk Soap Store, located in Ottawa, KS, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a family business in rural Kansas. We raise dairy goats and use their milk in our products. Our customers range from all over the United States, but typically those with skin issues.

Tell us about yourself

We have 8 children, and 7 of them have skin issues, so I began making products to help them. This turned into a business to help others suffering from eczema or psoriasis. Our children motivate us because they are also part of the business from start to finish. Recently my husband passed away, so carrying on his legacy is a big part of my motivation as well.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to hear that our products or our kindness have helped someone. Skin is one of the first things we see when we meet someone, and knowing that their confidence has been boosted makes a huge difference in our hearts.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a small business owner, you are the bookkeeper, customer service rep, purchasing manager, shipping manager, etc. Staying on task so that you still have time to create is my biggest challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Never take anything too serious or personal.
  2. Be prepared to do things you hate because they still have to get done.
  3. Find a strong support team that will also motivate and remind you of the whys.
