Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amisha Moorjani, Owner of The Food Quotient® Inc., located in Brampton, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Food Quotient® is a multi-award-winning women-led allergy-friendly restaurant and meal delivery company dedicated to creating custom-made globally inspired nutritious and delicious vegan, plant-based, and halal food using only the finest premium quality ingredients. We make our food in-house from scratch without any preservatives or artificial colours, or flavours. We are on a mission to eliminate single-use plastics by serving our food in reusable containers.

Our customers are those who are on a journey to become a healthier version of themselves and who like to enjoy healthy, delicious, and nutritious food and want to eat better without having to sacrifice their valuable time or quality of meals.

Tell us about yourself

I earned my bachelor's degree in Foods & Nutrition from one of Asia's most prestigious universities and then went on to earn my MBA and had a successful career in banking. However, I felt I could do more and bring more value to people's lives.

Over the years, I have noticed that there is a dearth of restaurants selling healthy vegetarian and vegan food that is also delicious. In addition, almost all of the places were selling deep-fried, highly processed junk food, where nutrition was lost in the processing. Having grown up in a culture that uses food to prevent and treat diseases and coming from a multi-generational entrepreneurial family, I realized having my own restaurant was the best way to share my knowledge of the healing power of food and also introduce people to global flavours and herbs and spices.

The Food Quotient® was born in 2018 and has since helped thousands of people eat healthier and live a more wholesome life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Neither I nor my family had any prior experience in the food industry, but with sheer determination, grit, research, and the help of our Executive Chef, today, The Food Quotient has become synonymous with healthy, delicious, and nutritious food and has won multiple awards since 2020.

My biggest accomplishment happens every time a customer comes back and then brings in friends and family to try out our food!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Making those tough decisions and sticking by them in spite of whatever the consequences...

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Identify a problem within your chosen industry, and figure out how your expertise can solve that problem.
  2. Know WHY you want to do the above, and keep reminding yourself of it as and when needed.
  3. Persevere, persevere, persevere, as long as you believe you are on the right path and your customers appreciate what you are doing. If not, know when to quit; there is no shame in cutting your losses.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Have faith, believe in yourself, get a great team of like-minded people to help you, and don't be shy to ask for help! Also, keep yourself up to date with what's happening in your industry. Above all, eat well and take care of yourself!
