Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Colleen Milne, Owner of The Food Blog, located in Kelowna, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I created and run The Food Blog, and my audience is busy home cooks looking for simple, mostly healthy recipes.

Tell us about yourself

I started The Food Blog as a hobby. It was a way to share my love of cooking and photography. I eventually decided to make it a business and invested some money, and dug right in.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to quit my well-paying day job and meeting, then surpassing my former income was an amazing feeling.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I work alone from home, so I think one of the hardest things for me is being accountable to myself. I also need to spend a lot of time on social media, and there are so many distractions. Finding focus and self-discipline can sometimes be a struggle.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Love what you do. Your success depends on it. Don't make it just about the money, or it will just feel like a grind.
  2. Set small, attainable goals and remind yourself of them constantly. Celebrate each time you reach a goal and then set a new one.
  3. Never stop learning. It gives you an edge. There's always something new to learn, and keeping up in a constantly changing world is so important.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Many people start a food blog and then realize it's incredibly competitive. It's also extremely hard work, and you have to wear many hats until you succeed. But If you really love to cook and have the skills to share, you can do it. There is room for everyone; if you learn all you can and really do the work, you can succeed.
