Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Steve Kodad, owner of The Feng Shui Cure, located in Bradenton, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I work with training and certifying new Feng Shui consultants and real estate agents all over the United States and Canada. Our certification for consultants is INTRINSIC FENG SHUI PROFESSIONAL (IFSP), and the certification for real estate agents I award is FENG SHUI STAGING PROFESSIONAL (FSSP).

Tell us about yourself

I taught for 15 years, mathematics, in public and private schools and at two colleges. I moved to Charlotte, NC, and got my real estate license in both North and South Carolina. I quickly became successful and ended up the broker/owner of a 30-plus agent real estate company. It was during this time I was introduced to Feng Shui. I began using these techniques with my home sellers with great success. They enjoyed the process, how inexpensive it was, and, of course, the results.

I was, at this time, speaking all over the Carolinas about Feng Shui and greatly enjoying the reaction. 2 years later, I decided to sell my company and totally dedicate myself to developing my Feng Shui practice. I had already become a certified Feng Shui professional consultant and even wrote my first book on how it worked great with all aspects of real estate.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

After 14 years of training just real estate agents, I was able to create a school along with my partner, Lisa Alban, to train and certify new consultants. The school, the Intrinsic School of Feng Shui, has become one of the best schools in North America. We have been recognized and awarded the Gold Standard Ranking by the governing board, the International Feng Shui Guild (IFSG). Our school took off quickly as we give lots of personal care to our students and graduates. We consider ourselves a family!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Nurturing and finding new clients and students. In a holistic business, most practices flounder or quit because of no interest or expertise in marketing.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You must keep getting better. Being stagnant and not growing does not work for a business to flourish.
  2. Too many entrepreneurs don't use their time wisely. Many go into it thinking they will be putting less time into their work day instead of more. Anyone who goes straight into entrepreneurship often doesn't have the discipline to succeed.
  3. Become an expert quickly on advertising and marketing. Without this, your business will fail within the first year or two.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Understand the amazing ability and strength of your subconscious. Feng Shui is very powerful because it affects the subconscious, where 95% of all decisions happen. Our past experiences have created these routines and templates that govern how we proceed through the day. Having positive routines to follow is a great way to accomplish more with less effort. Work on polishing your routines, especially your morning routine. Your routine for the 1st 30 minutes of the day encourages much more productivity and even contentment.
