Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Melanie Cool, Founder of The Eternal Optimist, located in Bellingham, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am all about health and happiness! I help people go from overwhelmed, burned out, and exhausted to healthier, happier, and excited about the future. Most of my clients are women over 40.

Tell us about yourself

According to my mom, when I was two years old, I put my Raggedy Ann doll in a chair and said, “Tell me your problems!” I was destined to become a psychotherapist. During my career, I have focused on positive psychology, the science of happiness. When the pandemic hit, I took my business online to spread the opportunity for health and happiness. My top strengths are hope, optimism, and future-mindedness. Using my strengths to impact the lives of others brings me joy.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I recently published my Get Healthy! Get Happy! 6-week journal, which includes my 5 secrets to health and 5 secrets to happiness. As orders pour in, I find myself inspired to continue creating ways to help people. I love creating social media content, videos, courses, managing my groups, and working with clients individually.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing for me is the tech side of things. I just want to talk to people! It has been a struggle for me to learn the “behind the scenes” things. I really push myself to go outside my comfort zone to learn what I need to do to keep my business running and growing.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You need to spend money to make money. From a scheduling program to a funnel program to business coaching, there are a lot of expenses. But when everything gets up and running smoothly, amazing things can happen!
  2. Use other people’s expertise. Like I said before, the tech side of things is not my forte. I have surrounded myself with people who know what they are doing. I can sleep at night knowing my funnel and all the integrations are working.
  3. Surround yourself with people who love you, support you, and want you to succeed. Connection and community are vital. If you are going to do this, you need to know there are people who have your back.
