Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Charlene Dinger, Founder of The Compassionate Creative, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am Movement Facilitator (Yoga, Dance, Fitness) In-Person and Online, Podcaster, and Educator. My customers: AnyBODY that wishes to connect to their body, mind, and spirit through movement.

Tell us about yourself

I come from a dance background and have been connected to movement in some way since I was a young child. The movement has always been my way of expression, of connecting to myself and my emotions. Once I discovered my own yoga practice, I eventually did my yoga teacher training and began exploring a more mindful way to connect with my body through. I believe deeply in the healing powers of this particular practice, and I want to share it and make it accessible to all - no matter your background, body type, age, race, or gender. I offer safe and inclusive classes in-person and online for beginners and experienced practitioners. I am motivated by my students. They challenge me and inspire me. They remind me that we are multi-layered beings that deserve to connect to ourselves in a meaningful way. I see how mindful movement and conscious breath can allow more space for peace, relaxation, and a deeper connection to self, and I wish to share this with everyone.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is having students tell me they feel better after taking a class and moving their bodies. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing someone who says, "I can't do yoga," come take a class and show up for themselves. In the end, they mostly feel much better than they did before class started. It's about creating a safe space and getting out of the way to allow people to explore their movement practice. Knowing I have facilitated that is the biggest accomplishment because I know I'm making a difference.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

With such a saturated market (especially in the Yoga Class YouTube space), it can be difficult to make a mark and stand out. Building a following and getting your message out can be daunting and overwhelming. You have this great product...now how are you going to sell it? Navigating this has been one of the hardest things for me as a business owner.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do You - find your most authentic voice. What is your message, and why is it important?
  2. Be Consistent - this takes patience and persistence even when it is challenging. Create a schedule that you can stick to. Your clients want to rely on you.
  3. Fill Up Your Own Cup - play, create, and do what you love. Be sure you are not pouring from an empty cup. Do the things you love in order to stay inspired and leave room for creativity to play.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Believe in yourself. Know that what you are selling is important and that the world needs it. If you create and work from an authentic place, with integrity and compassion, you will draw in the right people, and they will share your work with others.
