Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sara Brush, Co-Founder of The Centering Cooperative, located in Gig Harbor, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At The Centering Cooperative, we help people reignite their excitement, passion, & purpose so they can focus powerfully, think creatively, and harness their highest potential. We do this by facilitating workplace wellness workshops that include self-exploration, breathing, and making art. Our customers are businesses/organizations/workplaces that offer wellness support/employee appreciation/team building for leadership and staff.

Tell us about yourself

I'm dedicated to supporting workplace wellness because my first career was in the corporate world. I suffered from burnout and quit my job as a result. I struggled to manage my stress, my mental/emotional/physical health, and my relationships were all suffering. Through my own experience of recovering from burnout, I became certified as a Health Coach to help others manage stress and prioritize taking the best care of themselves. I help people create habits to raise self-awareness, manage stress, and exercise creativity.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is not giving up! I started my business in January 2020, and my first workshop was canceled for the COVID lockdown. It has been a difficult and uncertain journey with lots of change and growth. I'm really proud of myself for moving forward, even though it has been challenging.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

For me, one of the hardest things about being a business owner has been loneliness. Starting a new business and working outside of a conventional working environment is a shift that not everyone understands. I encountered some confusion and resistance from some of the people in my life who weren't comfortable with the risks of entrepreneurship. It can feel lonely when friends or family don't understand and aren't able to offer their full support. Being a business owner has pushed me to strengthen my relationship with myself. I have had to dedicate myself to doing the inner work to feel fully supported. I also reached out for support by working with a business coach and joining mastermind groups for entrepreneurs. Being surrounded and supported by other business owners has helped free me from loneliness.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get support! Find a coach, mentor, or other entrepreneurs who inspire and support you on your journey.
  2. Be gentle with yourself. The ups and downs of entrepreneurship can be tough, so self-compassion is essential.
  3. Create and honor boundaries. The lines between work and not work time can get blurry really quickly as an entrepreneur. Make sure to establish work hours and off hours to give yourself the space and rest that you need.
