Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in coaching but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ashish Singh, Founder of The Calm Mind Life Coaching, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Calm Mind life coaching is committed to unlocking people's potential and empowering them to live a life of happiness, abundance, and positivity. I have combined the mindfulness and meditation practices of the east with the scientific & practical techniques of the west. I call this combination "MeditAction"

I firmly believe it all starts with the mind. The one who can win over his mind can win everything. A calm and productive mind is the foundation of a happy life – a life that is free of stress, anxiety, and fear. Hence here, I work at the very foundation of my client's happiness and success and develop a roadmap to happiness and success. Anyone and everyone who is seeking calmness, clarity, and happiness in their lives are my clients.

Tell us about yourself

I am a certified life coach, along with a certification from Yale, who is trained in the scientific life coaching methods along with training in the ancient spiritual mediation and mindfulness techniques. My mission in life is to make the world a calmer place – one mind at a time is a constant source of motivation.

My journey into life coaching started when I studied and started practicing meditation and other related spiritual practices way back in 2005. And then came a time when I needed them the most. It was a time in my life when due to a back injury, my world as I knew it had come crashing down. Loneliness and helplessness were striking. My life revolved within the confines of that one-bedroom apartment and my only outside contact in Canada– My Physiotherapy clinic.

Depression, hopelessness, anger, anxiety, fear - these were the feelings that filled my emptiness. With every passing day, it was going bad to worse, and negativity had engulfed me. I was struggling to shake off the feeling, but I did not want to continue living a life that way. I decided that rather than waiting for the day that a miracle would happen, I would make my own miracle, so I took charge of my mental wellbeing and happiness.

I made a list of everything that was giving me anxiety and created a plan for each item to improve that area of my life. I set inspiring goals, and every goal was broken down for body, mind, career, and love. I took back control of my life and took many, many small steps to fight for the life I really wanted.

Today, I am more in control of my life than I ever was before. I went from feeling broken inside on a daily basis to become a certified life coach along with a certification in The Science of Well-Being from Yale University, eventually starting my own practice - The Calm Mind. The transformative power of meditation and mindfulness breathed huge, positive changes into my life. I now have a bigger vision for my future and mission in life. I created The Calm Mind with a mission to coach individuals and communities about mindfulness's power and importance. To coach people to develop a positive, calm, and solution-oriented mindset by bringing them to a calmer place in their minds and heart. And every time I see a client transforming from an anxious, fearful individual to an individual full of positivity and happiness, I feel I have taken one more step towards fulfilling this mission of making this world a calmer place.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Tough to pick one, but every time a client comes back and thanks me for making a positive difference in their life is an accomplishment for me. One of my clients called me a lifesaver, and that probably is one compliment and accomplishment I am proud of the most. The fact that I have been able to make a positive difference in so many people's lives gives me great joy.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being a small business owner, one cannot just be good at what you do but also all the other things that come with it like marketing, accounting, etc. So, one has to accept that if you have your own business, then you have to learn to do it all, not just your own work. This can be a bit daunting at times, but one must learn to make the business a success.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Define your individual purpose and build your business around it. Start something that inspires you, as once you get into something you genuinely believe in and are passionate about, things will flow naturally.
  2. Reject rejection – No business owner's life is without rejections and "No" s. Just take them in your stride, learn and move on. Don't take a "No" to your heart. Tell yourself, "No means Next," and with every "No," you are getting closer to a "Yes."
  3. Never stop improving – Be in the mode of continual improvement and never think that you have learned it all, as in this ever-changing world, we need to learn and adapt with time.
