Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Samantha Brooks, Owner of The Brainery, located in Atlanta, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Brainery is a chiropractic and wellness office serving the greater Atlanta and Fayette-Coweta communities. Our clients are typically moms and moms-to-be who are looking for holistic healthcare for their families. We specialize in perinatal and pediatric care and are able to serve ALL family members, including special needs kids.

Tell us about yourself

I have been in the medical field for almost 28 years. I started as a nurse's assistant in the specialties of Orthopedics and then Pediatrics for 7 years each. I was first adjusted when I was pregnant with my (now 14-year-old) son, and it was life-changing for me! I went on to run a chiropractic office and then went back for my Doctorate in chiropractic. I knew I wanted to specialize in children's health care, and I have completed hundreds of hours of post-doctoral training to bring the best possible care to women throughout their life cycle and children of all ages - even infants!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Building and operating multiple practice locations is a lot of work, and it takes a spectacular team of doctors to deliver the brand of wellness care I have created.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There are times as a business owner when the needs of your business and employees come before your own. I've definitely gone months without a paycheck in the beginning so that I could pay bills and payroll. It takes a lot of planning and sacrifice to be a business owner, and I've been lucky that our successes far outweigh our setbacks!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have your own money, but leverage someone else's when you can.
  2. Create a company that fills a need in your community.
  3. Have confidence in your gut instinct. If something feels off - don't rush it!
