Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health & wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Magen Benedetto, Founder of The Body Process, located in Culver City, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a private and class Pilates studio helping our clients through guided movement. Our customers seek to deepen their movement practices and feel better in their bodies, prioritizing wellness and health.

Tell us about yourself

I got into pilates a few years ago as I was exploring different movement modalities since I had been diagnosed early on with Rheumatoid Arthritis. I had a more corporate full-time job and always explored health, wellness, and movement in my free time, even becoming a personal trainer.

But, when I came across pilates and fell in love with it, I began diving into the mind-body connection, proper movement patterns, and the benefits for every type of body and decided to become certified. When the pandemic hit, it was time to start transitioning to the thing I loved -- movement.

I began freelancing as a copywriter to allow some flexibility in my schedule. I left the corporate job to focus more on my passion. I had the opportunity to make the leap and open a physical studio, and I took it. I haven't looked back since. What motivates me the most is the community we built with the clients and the instructors. It's unlike any other, and we love sharing our passion for wellness and movement with others and watching their passion for it grow.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Not only opening a business during a pandemic in June of 2021 but building such a successful business that we ended up expanding to an additional location within a year. Finding that success and growth with my team was a HUGE accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being the last line or decision maker. Sometimes significant obstacles or conflicts come up, and you are the one making the tough decision. Gone are the days you could "pass the buck," and sometimes you have stark realizations that it IS all on you. Own it, make the decision you feel is best and be the leader you need to be. Don't second guess yourself or let imposter syndrome stop you from being that successful boss/business owner.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

I would say be prepared to give everything you have to it. Being passionate about the business you're opening is critical because there will be hard days and long days, and it's essential to keep your passion in mind when you ever feel like you want to stop or quit.

Let your passion fuel you, and give it your all. I would also say to surround yourself with a fantastic team that believes in what you are trying to build.

And lastly, provide a quality service or product, treat customers with kindness, and make a community - it will become successful.
