Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ashley Koff, RD, founder of The Better Nutrition Program, located in Columbus, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Making personalized nutrition accessible to everyone, The Better Nutrition Program delivers app-based programs with personal coaches, group live sessions with me and other experts, and bonus content of recipes, guides, and other tools to help you identify and make your better choices - because knowing what is better is only one part of the battle :) We also provide services for groups and companies.

Tell us about yourself

I didn't know much about nutrition - I grew up in the era of diets and diet programs that were all about eating less and losing weight. When they didn't work for me, I assumed it was my fault. It wasn't until I learned about my digestion and what had kept it from running better that I was able to become healthy and empowered to understand my better nutrition choices. That launched my career in helping others do the same. But it's not easy, and today there are so many things to buy and do, most of which are not personalized and, as a result, don't work or don't work long term for people.

Our business is designed to help people and their practitioners see what their body needs to run better and figure out how to make those choices more often. That's something missing in medicine where you might get a low iron result in a lab and have someone tell you to take a supplement - but why is the iron low, and are you eating iron, or is something else you are taking interfering with iron absorption or is your digestion really the issue, etc. We need to stop telling everyone the same "eat this, not that" and get to 'hey, you should eat this because you are and you do, and you want...'

The rainbow is a great example, yeah, we know we should eat it - that's a catchy phrase, right? Eat the rainbow, but what color(s) are you missing most days? Why and how can you get it in more often because different parts of your body need each color to work better.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a practitioner and company, we have helped thousands of patients and hundreds of practitioners discover their better choices (or their patients' better choices) and how to make those more often.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

How to allocate my time and our company resources - I love to jump into new things, but the business often needs time to get previous new things done before starting something new.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Love what you are doing.
  2. Build a diverse team where your teammates' genius zones are totally different from yours.
  3. Goal set starting with a vision of 10 years out all the way down to quarterly.
