Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in training and education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sheila Fry, COO of The Babb Group, located in Katy, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Babb Group is an educational consultancy providing instructional design and curriculum development services to colleges and universities. TBG was among the first firms to offer support to institutions as they created not only online courses but entire programs.

Tell us about yourself

As an adjunct professor at the university, college, and community college levels, I have seen the student population change. We are now seeing more mature students; we are seeing young people who delayed enrollment to work and formed a better idea of what they want to study; we are seeing more working students who are balancing the quest for a better life with family responsibilities. I am motivated to discover new ways to support this diverse group of students while maintaining academic standards. Our students are not only gaining a credential but pathways into new ways of thinking, perceiving, and analyzing.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As COO, my greatest accomplishment has been moving the company and the team forward after we went through an acquisition last year. The change in ownership, management style, and to the new corporate structure has presented both expected and unexpected changes. I discovered that focusing on people and keeping clients, staff, and contractors apprised of developments and their benefits to them is the most important element of change management.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

In my role as COO, juggling the competing requirements of three companies and four brands means becoming comfortable living with contradictions. It means keeping a careful schedule while maintaining flexibility. It means being vigilant in spotting what could become a problem and solving it while holding true to a long-term vision for the consortium.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You first need to research your field and offer fully. Answer the question of how you can create a niche in the marketplace.
  2. Build a strong team of people who share your vision, support your goals, and can work independently.
  3. Stay committed! Wake up every day and start working toward achieving your goals.
