Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business and personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Asma Ahmed, founder, and principal of Soapbox Presentations based in Toronto, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I teach business professionals how to deliver standout presentations that inform, influence, and impress. Ultimately, I help professionals maximize their impact through powerful communication.

Tell us about yourself

When I graduated from University and entered the workforce, I noticed immediately that so many talented, experienced colleagues of mine hadn't ever learned how to present well. That bothered me because I knew they were being held back as a result. So many people lacked the confidence or felt incredibly nervous about presenting. I saw this across different roles, industries, even continents. I knew that they could do better, and I wanted to help them. It's no secret that there is a tremendous benefit when you can present well. I believe that powerful communication can be one of your greatest tools. Helping people present their very best - that's what led me to start my business, and it's what continues to motivate me today.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Deciding to go for it. This might sound crazy, but choosing to start my own business was the hardest thing I've had to do so far. Chasing my dream, trusting in myself, giving up my full-time job, taking that first step...and holding my head up high as I did it all. It took years and years of dreams and doubt until I finally made the decision. And I haven't looked back since!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Having to do it all. I'm a solopreneur, so I've got to wear a whole lot of hats. Some things can take so much time and effort because I lack experience or skill in that area. However, it is pretty satisfying in the end!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Create your dream team- people around you that will support you through the highs and lows.
  2. Take things one step at a time - baby steps.
  3. Do your research - know your audience, industry, abilities, opportunities, challenges, etc.
