What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a fine artist with an active painting studio practice and a community educator leading painting and drawing classes for all ages. My customers are friends and neighbors who are drawn to the arts, many of them are artists and creatives themselves.
Tell us about yourself
I was raised in a creative family with parents who are both active classical musicians and teachers. I decided to follow my calling as a teenager and pursued formal training in painting, receiving my BFA. For many years after graduating, I decided to work "normal" jobs in customer service and the printing industry while maintaining my studio practice on the side. It never really felt like a good fit, and upon becoming a mother, I quit my "day job" and focused on raising both my son and my business. I'm motivated every day by my desire to create and share both my paintings and the joy of creation with my community.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Making the leap and beginning. It was one of the most frightening things I've ever done, and I am so proud to be here and doing it.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Trusting the process and not getting bogged down by the paperwork.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have a support system - mentors who've been where you are now and supportive friends who tell you they are proud of what you're doing.
- Do your research - there may be free and low-cost resources available from local governments.
- Set your own pace - you don't have to do it all in one day. Take your steps and keep going!
