Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emily Burger, Owner of Texas Wellness Coaching, located in Groom, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Texas Wellness Coaching offers health and wellness coaching and nutritional therapy to people trying to make changes beneficial to their health and well-being, whether that is diet, exercise, mindset, stress relief, or something else entirely. While I work with people with many different challenges, I specialize in helping those struggling with autoimmune conditions regain their vitality and to better understand their condition.

Tell us about yourself

I became interested in health and wellness when I became ill over a decade ago, and doctors had no answers for why I had daily headaches, stomach aches, heart palpitations, and extremely low energy. They said, "Oh, you're just a mom. You have young kids. It will get better!" But it didn't. It was up to me to do the research and try different methods to discover what I needed to do to feel better, and I would have loved to have had an ally on this journey. This led me to pursue more education so that I could help others. I am now a Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach and a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner. I worked for several years as a nutritional counselor in a functional health clinic, but I found that most people were not making and sticking with the changes that we discussed in our sessions.

In the clinic, I was held back from working with people in a truly life-changing way, so I chose to leave and start my own business. I have had clients tell me that I have helped them more in three months in my own practice than I was able to in three years at the clinic. Seeing people's lives changed for the better-grandmothers keeping up with their grandkids, people getting through new fitness routines, seeking out the community they need to grow, or learning about the best way to support their bodies, is what keeps me going. My clients motivate me!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I was originally certified through Georgetown University and recently was asked to speak to a new group of students there. That was a huge honor and a lot of fun!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I call them the "boring parts." Taxes, finances, researching business structures. These are all things I HAVE to do to GET to do what I love.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Set your business hours, and keep them. If you were working for someone else, they would tell you when you should be at work. Even when you do not yet have the business traffic to make it make sense, find something to work on during your set business hours. For example, my hours are 9-4 (so that I can be available when my kids are out of school). I am working on something business-related during those hours, even if I am not seeing clients.
  2. Do not be afraid to put yourself out there. It is easy to think that means posting endless TikToks, but it is possible to be successful by finding opportunities to network in person and spread awareness about what you do. When you are passionate about your business, it shows, and people pick up on that energy. My own doctor now refers clients to me just because of a conversation we had at my regular check-up.
  3. Never stop learning and improving. There are always new ways to do and think about things, and even what appears to be a REALLY bad idea has something good about it. Seek out that good and use it.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Starting a new business is scary but SO worth it. I am a happier, better person for it, and I feel so lucky to be doing what I do!
