Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Andreea Apostol, Founder of Terradomi Candle Co., located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a woman-owned, eco-friendly candle company based in Toronto. Our customers are people who value self-care, mindfulness, and sustainability. We believe in the joy of life's small yet magical moments. Light a candle and take some precious time just for yourself.

Tell us about yourself

I am a first-generation immigrant to Canada. I grew up in a small rural community in Romania and was raised by a family of small business owners. Very early on in my childhood, I became aware of how important it is to support local businesses, reduce waste and over consumption and live life in a sustainable way.

When I moved to Canada, I started to become more exposed to mass production (candle-making industry included), and I had a dream to create a candle that is made locally with natural ingredients and can safely be enjoyed in every home.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

One of our biggest accomplishments is working with large retailers and becoming more available to consumers across Canada. Our Astrology Collection is now available at Indigo Music & Books online and in stores.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things as a business owner is realizing I simply cannot do it all, and it may be in the best interest of my business to delegate and trust other people with various tasks.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Think of the WHY behind your business. What is your motivation, and what drives you? Do you love what you do? This is good to think about before you start on your path and also to keep as a reminder in the harder times.
  2. Networking. Connect with fellow business owners, and be active in your community, and you will feel a lot more supported in your journey.
  3. Ask for help when you need it. The temptation is high for you to be trying to do everything from product creation, marketing, inventory, accounting, social media, blogging, in-person events, etc. However, that is often simply impossible to achieve. Your business can grow much quicker if you focus on the big picture and hire help when you need to.
