Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Keith Webster, CEO of Terracor Business Solutions, located in Winnipeg, MB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Terracor is dedicated to providing various e-Commerce business solutions that improve and automate our clients' day-to-day work processes. From providing implementations and expert consulting for their resource management software to developing web applications, our goal is to help improve their business.

With a complete set of specialized services offered, Terracor is here to help improve, automate, and build multi-channel B2B e-Commerce businesses.

Tell us about yourself

My background is as a Software Engineer. I originally started at Terracor as a Junior Software Developer and moved through the ranks until I became CTO.

I moved to the role of CEO as our business became more software-focused, and my background meant I had a really good understanding of software development, planning and analysis and was best positioned to manage our strategic direction going forward.

What motivates me every day is that our team is all tightly integrated and driven towards the same goal of becoming the best B2B eCommerce and software provider within our space.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Going virtual!

The pandemic brought a lot of challenges to businesses and for us, moving out of our offices to our homes to work was a challenge at first, but over time we have successfully gone 100% virtual, which not only provides the business and team with flexibility but also allows us to be more agile in our planning and execution.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner, particularly of a small business, is wearing multiple hats. Whether it’s handling administrative tasks, marketing & sales, business strategy, and account management, it can be a real challenge to move everything along effectively without impacting the business negatively.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Ensure you develop a clear and honest set of mission and vision statements for your business.
  2. Build out an agile business plan that is actionable and accountable to you and your team.
  3. Develop a financial model that not only allows you to manage expenses and forecast revenue but also puts profitability front and center.
