Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Elise Hanks, founder of Terra Luna, located in Philadelphia, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Terra Luna is an herbal apothecary and urban farm based in Philadelphia, PA. Our herb and flower farm is at the heart of our entire operation. Not only do we grow the herbs and flowers that go into our herbal recipes and floral designs, but it represents our main goal of connecting ourselves and our customers to the Earth. We hope to offer products to any customers who want to find radiant skin, a sustainable home, and ways to tap into healthy relaxation, all with the support of the plants from our farm. Terra Luna is all about offering herbs and flowers for everyday wellness.

Tell us about yourself

Terra Luna was born in the Spring of 2015 as my passion project. Struggling with sensitive skin and the stress of city life, I began to experiment with herbal remedies and gardening. After diving into the world of plant medicine and developing my own recipes, Terra Luna began to take shape! Since then, the product line and apothecary have expanded, and we have grown to steward a successful herb + flower garden. This whole project is about helping people take their wellness into their own hands.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Last year, we were able to offer workshops in both herbal tea blending and floral design, two of my favorite topics. We used plants from our own growing space in these classes and were able to expose a lot of folks to basic herbalism and floristry techniques.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Work-life balance! It can be very easy to work 24/7 when you are responsible for the movement of your business. I'm always working on reminding myself to take breaks :) Self-reflection and taking the time to have fun are just as important as accounting and to-do lists.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Try to find a balance between immediate and long-term goals. Being present and going with the flow of the moment can be a great strength, but it's always important to zoom out and make sure that your actions today will contribute positively to your overall long-term business goals. Even if you don't have a traditional business plan, keeping an eye on the larger picture is incredibly valuable.
