Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Terise Lang, Founder of Terise Lang Writes, located in Fayetteville, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is informing black women about the four pillars of wellness – mind, body, soul, and heart, using meditation and other techniques to move their lives forward in these major areas.

According to the latest statistics, only 60% of African-American women ever marry. Not only are there deficits in terms of opportunities to meet eligible men with whom they can have meaningful and fulfilling long-term relationships, but the overall representation of the black female, those (shudder) images usually portrayed in news features, dramas, movies, and even ad copy, are often demeaning. They fail to represent the values and the remarkable quality of the majority of black females in the United States.

Tell us about yourself

Having endured many years of frustration in the corporate world and numerous heartbreaks in my personal life, I can directly relate to many of the experiences and challenges faced by other African American women. I don't presume to know everything about their lives— because they are all individuals—but I am a very empathetic person who believes in being absolutely honest and transparent with my clients.

My main goal as a trained holistic (mind and body) health and wellness coach who practices what I preach is to shift those widely disseminated negative stereotypes to expectations and achievements of increased prosperity, health, happiness, joy, respect, acknowledgment, potential, and hope. My one-on-one coaching sessions and signature wellness course, Ebony Jazzed, are designed to empower African American women to recognize and celebrate their unique beauty, vitality, and internal strength. I also have a few ebooks in the works that will focus on specific wellness topics.

So how do interested potential clients start their journey? With a FREE 15-minute wellness consultation, they can access it by clicking on this booking link. Again, this is just a conversation about where they are right now. There will be no pushy sales. I am interested in the person, her issues, and how I could best serve HER NEEDS AND WANTS with my knowledge. If I find that my skills will not meet her requirements, I will even refer her to someone else who can be of greater service. That’s how I roll.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Setting up the entire operation from scratch on my own with no outside help or financing. The second biggest accomplishment is receiving acknowledgment from Cassandra Robinson of LinkedIn and GS of Atlanta (I’ll leave her full name private), who experienced immediate results–in healing (spiritual or physical) after just one session with me.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the most difficult things about being a new business owner is getting the word out about what your mission and passion are and persevering through the most discouraging and invalidating business days, the ones where you begin to doubt your abilities and whether it was wise to have chosen the type of business you selected.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Whether your business is online or not, you must develop an online presence and audience FIRST. People will inevitably look you up on the internet. Make sure your info is searchable.
  2. Educate yourself about the structural, legal, financial, and technical requirements of setting your business up right the first time.
  3. Network with other people in your industry for tips. Their skills might help fill information gaps in your business. Also, don’t be shy to ask for encouragement and support repeatedly. You’re going to need it to sustain yourself through the tough times—unless you are extremely fortunate.
