Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Crystal Rodenbaugh, Owner of Tenfold Counseling Group, located in Kansas City, MO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a private counseling group that is located in downtown Kansas City. We offer a variety of services and strive to create an environment where people feel known and challenged to become the best versions of themselves. Our location is purposeful so that we can be available to those who live and work downtown so that it is convenient and easy to pop over for an appointment before, during, and after working hours. We want to try and eliminate any reasons people might delay coming to counseling, so we create a welcoming and modern office space with a coffee bar and a beverage fridge for people to come and take a load off.

Since there are 8 of us on the team, we do see a variety of clients coping with the challenges of anxiety, depression, grief, trauma recovery, relational conflict, addiction, and life transitions. There are a number of different treatment modalities that we utilize, but really we want people to know that they have a safe and judgment-free place to go to talk through whatever it is that they are going through.

Tell us about yourself

I had the opportunity to work and live in England for a time in my 20s, and it really solidified for me that I valued doing life alongside people and felt like if I got to do some semblance of that, I would be living the dream. The concept of Tenfold Counseling came from the notion that when you invest in yourself, the impact that it will have on your life and even the people around you would be ten-fold.

I fully believe that when we practice self-awareness and participate in growth conversations and activities, there is a ripple effect in every area of our lives: our relationships, emotional health, physical accomplishments, and spiritual connectedness. This vision motivates me every day because people are resilient, and I am truly honored that I get to play a part in their transformation.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In my opinion, the idea that you can create something out of nothing is such a cool thing. I would never have dreamed when I first had the idea to go out on my own that I would have built a thriving group practice. I do really pride myself on who I have surrounded myself with on the team. They are incredible people, and it brings me such joy to work with them and just know of the greater impact we are having on people's lives. I also have stayed true to my vision to be centrally located downtown, and I do hope the inspiring view of the city helps people truly see what's possible.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

While I do practice and create space for self-care, the pressure of providing and always being available can be quite heavy. It's always something that I am thinking about, ensuring that all aspects of the business are healthy and running smoothly. I want people to overall have a positive experience on staff, and with our clients, so it is hard to shut work out because I just don't want any of the balls to drop. Of course, it is inevitable, and I have a realistic understanding, but it is a challenge that I'm always navigating.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find those people who are in your corner championing your success. My husband always believed that I could do this, even probably before I even did it for myself, and I'm convinced that his support was foundational for my success.
  2. Stay close to your initial dream. Don't compromise, settle, or cut corners but trust the process that is unfolding because it's ultimately forged by your vision.
  3. Surround yourself with like-minded people who believe in you and wholeheartedly believe in your vision. When all of these things are at play, whatever your business consists of, customers and clients will come because they are drawn to what you created.
