Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kaben Kramer, Principal of Tenderlyrooted, located in Biggs, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are 4th generation California walnut farmers, and we sell our sprouted walnuts directly to customers online, shipping to all 50 states. Our sprouted walnuts are a bio-available superfood and are grown by us, processed by us, packaged by us, and shipped by us--straight from our farm to your doorstep.

Tell us about yourself

We love bringing delight into your life and creating spaces of delight for you to enjoy. Whether it is as simple as a delectable and healthy snack shared between two friends in quiet conversation or coming to stay in our luxury glamping dome here on the farm, we love to provide spaces that delight.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Sprouted walnuts are delicious and healthy--and completely unheard of. Our biggest accomplishment is seeing our farm's goodness find a happy place in your pantry: finally, a snack that is both delicious and good for you!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Continuing to get the message out that walnuts can be a delicious, low allergen, and healthy: consumer education is the hardest thing. We always say our sprouted walnuts spread by "taste of mouth," and it's true. We consistently have people tell us that they'd been delaying trying our sprouted walnuts (some for over a year!), and when they finally do, they regret not buying them sooner! Walnuts have a bad rep for being bitter, high in fatty acids, and highly allergenic. Sprouted walnuts solve most of this: the bitterness (tannin) is removed, the fatty acids are more bioavailable to be used (instead of stored) by our bodies, and while the allergens are not gone, they are often reduced.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. There is no perfect time to start, so start now, start small, and start with something you love.
  2. Be flexible on the goals but firm on the vision.
  3. Find a few people who "get it" and keep them close: you'll need them when things go off the rails, and you doubt yourself.
