Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tegan Monaco, Owner of Tegan Monaco Photography, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own Tegan Monaco Photography, specializing in family photography, Corporate headshots, events, and more! I love to work both outdoors and indoors in my studio, capturing these moments.

Tell us about yourself

I've always had a camera in my hand - at every family event, you would find me taking photos at the event and sharing them with everyone after. I felt proud that I was able to capture a moment with everyone together. After studying photography more seriously in New York City, I was motivated to start my own business. With two young children, I wanted to find flexibility in my schedule to work and take care of my growing family. After taking the leap of faith, launching a website, and promoting to new clients, I became continually motivated with every photography session I booked! The positive reviews I receive from my clients after their photoshoots with me continually motivate & inspire me. I love being able to capture a moment for a young family with little ones or a professional who is in need of an updated headshot for their job. In my second year of business, I am proud of achieving 100 Google reviews with a 5-star rating from all of my clients.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

2022 brought many accomplishments for my business! I was hired by a local dance studio to photograph over 85 dancers over a 10-hour time frame. Not only did I capture great images the families all enjoyed, but I also stayed on schedule and loved meeting so many new families. When working with Corporate teams, I successfully photographed over 60 employees in a 3-hour window capturing headshots for each individual employee, and successfully delivered their final individual galleries within one week of their shoot.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Knowing when to take a break! When it's your own business, you are thinking about the strategy, marketing, and delivery 24 hours a day. Building in time to recharge and rest is key. I have to stop myself from working on my business every day, but I am so passionate about delivering great service and high-quality products.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Build your community - reach out to others in your field and ask questions! Learn from others.
  2. Create a solid website and plan out your social media calendar to save time.
  3. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there and try something new. Be creative. Progress over perfection!
