Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Karmen Lee, Founder and CEO of TeenEdge Malaysia, located in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

TeenEdge is a teen and youth development organisation focusing on Creative Arts Industry Mentoring. We organise programs and workshops for young talents who are passionate about exploring their field of interest under industry mentor guidance for practical growth. Our customers are mainly teenagers and youth.

Tell us about yourself

With a background in Psychology and a passion for creative arts, I started TeenEdge in 2017 to support and guide young talents to acquire the skills and experience in the fields. In a society where more focus and attention are given to academic achievement, I founded TeenEdge to provide an equal opportunity for teens and youth who are passionate about the underrated creative arts fields to have a chance to explore further and potentially establish a career for themselves, doing what they love.

The motivation comes from the growth I witnessed in the teens and youth in our mentoring program and that they are genuinely happy when they do what they enjoy. Positive feedback from parents is also part of the motivation as they reaffirm that what I am doing is making an impact on a person's life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Seeing the members of our mentoring program progress and grow in skills, experience, and personality throughout the years that they have been with us is the best moment for me. It truly reflects our slogan - Do with Passion, Live with Purpose.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a business owner, the company's growth has been my priority in life ever since. Therefore there is no more work-life balance, and it almost feels like my business is my life. Sometimes I will have to remind myself to take a break and not be so harsh on myself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't be afraid not to know something, and be open to keep learning.
  2. Have a plan before doing anything; think through the short-term and long-term strategy.
  3. Know your purpose for starting a business and stay focused.
