Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tesia Alston, Owner of Teddy Esthetics Bar, located in Saint Clair Shores, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Teddy Esthetics Bar is a lash and PMU academy where our licensed & 4x certified staff also offer a range of services from our specialty handmade Russian volume eyelash extensions to classic natural lash extensions, henna brows, brow tint & shaping, custom facials, jelly pedicures, micro pigmentation, microblading & microshading.

Our pigments & products are plant-based and chemical-free. We believe the fewer ingredients, the more pure the products. Our ideal clients are everyday people. We cater to the inclusiveness of enhancing the beauty in everyone, a place where clients become family.

Tell us about yourself

I started my company 8 yrs ago. I was laid off from my job and decided to finally turn my hobby into a career. I was nervous but excited to finally see my vision now in physical form. Being able to consistently continue to provide top-quality service to my clients is what keeps me going. Our place is like a second home of peace and tranquillity from when they walk into the time they walk out. I love being able to provide a safe place for hardworking everyday people.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment would be expanding to a larger storefront location. It was a proud moment to be able to give our clients more space with their own parking lot. And adding on new services to become a one-stop-shop for all their beauty needs.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I’d say one of the hardest things about being a business owner is even when things are not going according to your plan, being able to remain in gratitude because you must know things take time, and not being able to be grateful for what currently is will prevent or prolong what will be. I am always in a state of appreciation. It helps when your mind wants to fixate on the negative; I focus on the good.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be consistent; faith without consistency is insane.
  2. Have a plan; it is good to help you remember where you are and where you want to be. (No jumping ahead).
  3. Be an honest human in all areas. Doing business is easier when potential business associates and clients can trust your word to provide the best service and products to them.
