Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tramelle D Jones, Founder of TDJ Consulting, located in San Antonio, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

TDJ Consulting is a Strategic Success and Workplace Wellness firm helping women in mid-level positions who are ready to level up but find their growth stunted! We offer tools and strategies to leverage their strengths and accomplishments to be paid what they're worth!!!

Tell us about yourself

I've worked in personal and professional development for 20+ years, facilitating my first resume class in 1998! I consider myself a career planning geek and love to focus on the strategy needed beyond a basic resume. I really want to see women win because we have unique experiences in the workplace and often forget to advocate for ourselves! I'm motivated by elevating women's workplace experiences, seeing them be paid what they're worth, and being challenged in positions they love!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Over the last nine years, TDJ Consulting has transitioned from a resume-only organization to a company that offers a full suite of products and services, resulting in clients reporting major increases in annual salary. Clients have boasted of salary increases upwards of $20K, $30K, and $40K, and in one case, a client even tripled their salary! Their success is my success!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The biggest challenge for me as a solopreneur is making time for my personal life! Sometimes I get so focused on work that I forget to take time to go out and enjoy myself! Although I enjoy the work I do and tend to get energized by the 1-on-1 interactions I have with clients, that's not enough. It doesn't replace the need to give myself room to be creative in other aspects of my life, connect with friends/family, and just do absolutely nothing without the guilt of "I should be working." It's something I'm constantly focused on improving.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get Help! There are free and low-cost business advisors through your local SBA affiliate. I've relied on my business advisor when making major decisions and continue to utilize their expertise as often as I can.
  2. Find Your Tribe! Surround yourself with people who understand the complexities of being a business owner. Someone who will celebrate with you, offer pep talks, and talk resources.
  3. Utilize Automation! Make it easy for your customer to get the information they need, sign up/pick products, and pay you while you're sleeping! There are plenty of ways to create automation within your business, so a 1on1 with you isn't required for every transaction.
