Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tawainna Houston, Owner of Journey of Wellness Natural Medicine Center, located in Decatur, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own and operate a holistic wellness consultation practice. I help people navigate their wellness journey by identifying the root cause of their medical issues, and then I bring their health back into balance using proven and highly effective natural therapies. I mostly attract people who practice natural health as a way of life and those who have felt that the conventional medical system has failed them through prolonged prescription drug usage that may have increased their health issues instead of correcting the initial problem(s). In other words, they have grown sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Tell us about yourself

During my graduate school studies, I was originally trained in pastoral care and counseling. After working in human services for over a decade, I was called to work with the whole person and not just compartments of what was out of balance. With medical school education and clinical training, specifically in naturopathic medicine, I became a Naturopathic Physician equipped with scientifically understanding and working with one's complete being-ness. Mental/emotional imbalances can cause physical disturbances, and now I am helping patients manage mind, body, and spirit as we regenerate wellness from within in order for it to fully manifests its healing properties outwardly. I am motivated and inspired daily by the sacred relationship between doctor and patient. I am invited into patients' lives most often when they are at their most vulnerable, most frightened, and most discombobulated from a recent disease diagnosis. They are in search of a second opinion or a more natural wellness approach. When patients work with me, I treat it as an honor to be trusted enough to guide them towards a place of empowerment, emotional stability, and strength to manage their health in a way that is not only life-affirming but the quality of life re-building. That is an undeniable satisfaction I get to experience at this level of service to others every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a business owner, I get to watch my patients grow in their knowledge and understanding of themselves and their own health, and I get to watch myself and my practice grow from the experience I gain from working with each and every individual I work with. I am in the unique position to constantly gather a greater understanding beyond the books with real-time data on improving human health conditions. This big cumulative accomplishment is the perfect set-up for a win-win success rate.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

My biggest challenge has been staying relevant and doing what is needed to reinvent my business's ability to reach, capture regularly, and sustain the importance of using natural medicine in a competitive market driven towards the success of conventional medicine only.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Stay true to yourself and your own personal and professional values. Just because the trends change and you want to stay relevant, it should never be done in such a way that you compromise on those key pillars.
  2. Start a business that you are passionate about running because even when the process becomes so challenging (and it will) that you consider quitting, it is the passion that will help you receive the "No's" as stepping stones and therefore sustain your vision towards the "YES" that will open more doors for your business.
  3. If entrepreneurship were easy, everyone would work for themselves. Condition your mind for marathon-level success.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

We are all here to grow and expand to our fullest capacity of being. Whatever you believe you can achieve is attainable and can only be stopped when you cease believing in yourself.
