What's your business, and who are your customers?
Tasty Bakery is a dedicated gluten-free establishment in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Our mission is to offer products that everyone can enjoy, whether they are gluten intolerant or not. All of our products are gluten-free, soy-free, and corn-free. Additionally, we offer grain-free, dairy-free, vegan, and low-glycemic options. Our high-quality artisan baked goods are indiscernible from any traditional glutinous baked goods.
Tell us about yourself
I have been a baker all my life, and I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in 2007. I wanted to develop recipes that I could eat but also share. After moving back to Michigan from Brooklyn, NY, I thought my Ann Arbor community would be a great place to try. I started at the Ann Arbor Farmers' Market in May of 2009 and continue to do that now, selling in coffee shops and having a storefront at 416 West Huron. It's pretty fun going to work each day to bake.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I love to be able to accommodate those who thought they'd never be able to have a tasty treat again!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
It's a lot of physical work, and if I have to work long days, it really wears on me.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
I would say to do what I didn't - go work in that industry for at least six months to try it on. Also, hire people to do the things you don't know how to do and let them do it, let your employees help you grow your business with their expertise, and involve them in the development and decision-making.
