Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tara Murney, an emotional intelligence coach based in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I mentor conscious leaders to experience new levels of clarity, focus, creativity, and fulfillment to create a global impact through their businesses. I have been best recognized for my coaching cultural visionaries, leading changemakers, and soul-preneurs, consulting and teaching them how to unlock their creative genius, and I use executive strategic awareness for training, self-awareness, and emotional EQ.

I offer pragmatic and efficient coaching sessions, lessons, comprehensive insights, tools, strategies, and intuitive conversations to help individuals access and embody their most empowered and authentic selves to lead intentionally.

“It's not what you do that matters, it's how you intentionally show up, aligned and in the best and highest version of yourself. It’s by being in the present, purposeful, living, and operating in deliberate creation in your wheelhouse of genius. It’s truly how you live and lead that deeply influences your success and possibilities.”

My customers range from business professionals who are successful yet unfulfilled and desperately want to find their purpose and love their life again to teachers in education, women entrepreneurs, and prison inmates.

Tell us about yourself

I started coaching women and men who felt unfulfilled in life. They lacked clarity, joy, abundance, and purpose and were seeking a deeper meaning in life because I, too, once felt exactly like that. My passion for teaching people how to unlock fulfillment, prosperity, abundance, and purpose was kindled during my adolescent years, which has now become a full-time endeavor for me.

Every day I am motivated to help people unlock their gifts and excavate their core selves by taking them through a self-discovery journey so that they can live a life of possibility and one that is in alignment with their authentic selves, including their values. I am motivated by the opportunity to create a space where people feel safe, brave, and willing enough to unlearn and relearn.

We have been so conditioned through society, our education systems, our parents, and social media that we believe there is not enough for us, a lack of opportunities, seats at the table, job positions, and so much more that we simply accept our life for what it is sadly. I show them differently. My motivation to help people unwrap their gifts, share their wheelhouse of genius with the world, become more spiritually aligned, and create the life they dream of is my greatest motivator, as I know that small ripples create big waves.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My greatest accomplishment as a business owner has been being awarded the Global Chair position for the G100 Prison Reforms & Reintegration program. The Prison Reforms & Reintegration has the vision to work towards the safety and skill of women in prisons and help rehabilitate and reintegrate them into society with the least stigma and maximum opportunities. The G100 is an empowered group of 100 global women leaders from across the world, in 100 diverse sectors, supported by the G100 Denim Club of “He for She” champions, having Country Chairs in over 100 countries with 100 local leaders in each for powerful advocacy, awareness, actions for impact and influence with local governments, global organizations, corporations, and community for accelerated actions for a gender equal future. The G100 comprises a league of luminaries of eminence and excellence, including Nobel Laureates, Heads of State, Ministers, Businesswomen, Philanthropists, Investors, Entrepreneurs, CEOs, Corporate and Community Leaders - a powerful group of women leaders and achievers from all walks of life who wish to give back and move us all forward as architects of the future.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a business owner, challenges are inevitable, and many require your attention month to month, sometimes even daily. I believe one of the keys is to correctly identify the challenges ahead of time and create ways to mitigate them for the future sustainability of your business. The greatest challenge for me was being able to pivot in times of change. I quickly needed to create spaces and a plan for growth and the evolution of my business, such as updating technology, purchasing new apps and systems that would grant me more free time, staying up to date with the latest in statistics, hiring mentors and learning how to build better programs and workshops that could better serve my clients.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You will never be ready; whether it’s the time, skills, money, or knowledge that you feel you’re lacking, I promise you that you will gain all of it as you go and grow it as you go. Just start.
  2. Value yourself. Many entrepreneurs undervalue themselves and, therefore, also are chronic under-chargers. It's key to know the standard industry rates, and it's also normal for any new business owner to charge a tad less; however, do not stay there. Do not sell yourself short. As you gain testimonials, experience, and growth, charge your value based on your capabilities.
  3. Learn, learn, and learn some more! You should be a forever student in life and business. Make a serious commitment to learning everything that you can about how to run your business and grow within your profession. Learn from others in your industry or niche. If you are the smartest person in the room, then you are in the wrong room.
