Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tania Khazaal, Founder of Tania the Herbalist, located in Ottawa, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a health & wellness coach. I educate people on holistic living practices, educate on alternatives to conventional medications and practices while empowering people to take their health into their own hands. I also help healers create online wellness businesses to help them become more self-sustainable and self-reliant and help push our natural healing modalities around the world.

Tell us about yourself

I fell into the realm of herbalism and natural healing, watching my mother nearly succumb to the pharma industry, laying on her death bed, overmedicated with minimal communication. This caused me a complete breakdown and forced me to take time off work and spend time with nature, trying to ease my own anxiety. Through my time in nature, I heard nature speak to me and tell me there is another way. I turned to plant medicine and helped my mother get off narcotics and return to living again.

This motivates me every day to want to educate the world to know their options, to know there are natural ways to heal without the side effects and debilitating effects some of the conventional ways can have, and most importantly, it motivates me to want to empower people to know the healing power behind their bodies and immune system when given the right resources.

I also am motivated to help other healers reach their goals and passions in educating the world about the many different ways of healing naturally. It isn't just a one-size-fits-all; therefore, the more healers we can get out there, sharing their stories and successes, the more chance we have to heal.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Winning Faces Magazine as Ottawa's favorite natural wellness company in 2020. As a new entrepreneur, this was a massive reward and recognition.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Accepting failure. Knowing that what you thought might work will require going back to the drawing board and trying again. This is also rewarding as it is hard because it is all part of the journey and experience you can share with others. The evolution of a business never stops, some things work, and others don't.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. The health and wellness businesses are estimated to hit $27 billion by 2030. Now is the time to join.
  2. Baby steps go a long way. Many people look at the end result, get overwhelmed, and decide never to try, yet don't realize that many baby steps are all you need to make it happen.
  3. Listen to your intuition. Your intuition is guiding you on your intended path and purpose in this world. Even if you have to work your full-time job while you pursue this passion, 5 years from now, you will be thanking yourself you got started and took that leap of faith.
