Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skincare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Patricia (Pat) Desselle, Founder of Tanglewood Soap Company, located in Marksville, LA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Tanglewood is a handcrafted artisan soap business. My customers vary in age as I have fragrances & designs that appeal to all age groups. I also have a natural dog shampoo bar & pet cologne line named after my dog Ben.

Tell us about yourself

I started making handcrafted soap in the mid-80s when my daughter began having allergic reactions to commercial bath products. I started with my grandmother's recipe & refined it over the years. My motivation to do what I do each day is my customers. Once they use a handcrafted soap, they realize what chemicals have done to their skin over the years.

The handcrafted bar begins to nourish their skin, bringing back soft, moisturized skin they haven't seen in a long time. Some are skeptical, but once they try it, I affectionately call them "Tanglewood junkies." Their messages of satisfaction & joy to finally finding a product that actually works is my greatest motivation!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I wouldn't call it accomplishments, but I do love giving back. Veterans organizations, local police & fire departments, women's shelters, animal rescue & rehab, etc., all receive donated soaps for their fundraisers. Tanglewood soaps were included in a swag bag for the 2016 Golden Globes gifting suite.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I love creating, but the "business" side is the hardest part. Also, for me, social media. You have to be very disciplined for everything to run smoothly and have time to do it all right, a YouTube channel, Instagram, and Facebook, they all require a lot of time & babysitting.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Discipline, more discipline, and be organized! I'm a one-person band... I do it all, and I sometimes work 18 hours a day. Be prepared to commit & follow through.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Don't forget about you! Save some time to get away & reboot yourself!
