Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tamika Newsome, Founder of Detroit Lash & Brow, located in Detroit, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Enhancing everyone's natural beauty that steps in our door is Detroit Lash & Brow's ultimate goal; Detroit Lash & Brow is a locally ran business by a licensed Esthetician and native Detroiter.

Tell us about yourself

What made me start my business? I worked at cosmetic counters for years; I always loved how the customers would feel after I made their makeup application but disliked the pressure of the sales and opening credit cards. I decided to start doing freelance makeup; I missed the skincare part of working at the cosmetic counters, so I got my Esthetician license and fell in love with eyelashes and eyebrows; my work is more natural, enhancing my clients' natural beauty.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment about being a business owner is that Detroit Lash and Brow has been open for seven years, and I'm extremely grateful that we've had over 700 people walk through our doors… through the grace of God.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner is time, time putting into your business, time balancing family and friends, and finding time for self-care.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't stop! Things will get hard, and clients will slow up, but it's like any season in your life; keep pushing.
  2. Don't let anyone talk you out of your dream. People may say while you're starting out, your not making enough money, but time will prove them wrong.
  3. Always promote your business. Getting yourself out there may not always be easy, but once you are, word of mouth is extremely powerful.
